I remember first having these doughnuts in the 1960's as a small child - and have been addicted to them ever since. The Victoria Market American Doughnut Van is one of the last of the original Doughnut vans extant in Melbourne. There are two other sites that I know of but I will save them for future reviews...

In short this is not a fancy doughnut to look at. These doughnuts are freshly made, usually within five minutes of sale. It is a medium to golden brown in colour, irregular in shape and usually satisfyingly crispy on the outside with a soft fluffy texture inside when hot - these doughnuts are best eaten hot. Jam is usually not too sweet - unlike many chain store doughnuts. Their taste is quite sweet with a nice hint of saffron to them. Before serving, these doughnuts are rolled in sugar and it is a coarser variety than is often used. Expect to get sugar everywhere! I always give mine a good shake before eating. Also locate the jam hole as Jam will often projectile out if eaten from opposite the hole!

Quite cheap in price, and immensely popular at the Market. these are simply the best doughnuts around and are the benchmark I use to measure all other doughnuts.(Now that the original MCG Doughnut Van is no more).

Try them, you won't be disappointed!

I must agree that the vic market american doughnuts are the best in the world, i would pretty much do anything to get the recipe, save me driving an hour just to get a fix.
