Zappole with Valrhona chocolate Sauce

Zappole with Valrhona chocolate Sauce

English Translation - Doughnuts with Chocolate sauce and it's bloody great

LOCATION: 80 Burke Street Melbourne Victoria Australia

Grossi Florentino's

PRICE: $7.00 AUD for Two

It's extremely lucky that I asked the professional staff at Grossi's what "Zappole with Valrhona chocolate Sauce" was, because I had absolutely no idea what it could be. When I heard it was "doughnuts with chocolate sauce" as an intrepid doughnut reviewer I could not resist temptation. For an extremely well priced $7AUD you get two large doughnuts with a gorgeous, thick, rich, bitter-sweet chocolate sauce that you liberally use to douse the dough in. This doughnut, perhaps more because of the sauce than the actual dough had the WOW factor similar to the one I had with "The Commoner French Beignets" and the "Dunkin Donuts Apple Cinnamon". The dough is thick, buttery and chewy (similar to "American Van Doughnuts at Queen Victoria Market") and is absolute magic when combined with the chocolate sauce. However, I am more of a fan of a lighter style doughnut, and I have to mark it down slightly in terms of texture. A slightly lighter doughnut with perhaps a tidier finish would see absolute top marks. However these are small gripes - it was perfect with my cafe latte. From Wikipedia"A zeppola (plural zeppole, in southern dialects zeppoli) or St. Joseph's Day cake, also called sfinge and in Rome Bignč di S. Giuseppe is a pastry typical of Roman, Neapolitan and generally peninsular Italian cuisine. Commonly light, deep-fried dough balls about 2 inches in diameter, these doughnuts or fritters are usually topped with powdered sugar and may be filled with custard, jelly, cannoli-style pastry cream or a butter-and-honey mixture. Their consistency ranges from light and puffy to bread- or pasta-like.
